De homestead act van 1862 zorgde ervoor dat amerikanen de mogelijkheid kregen om op een stuk land te gaan wonen en een boerenbedrijf op te zetten voor een periode van vijf jaar. Eveneens werd in 1860 de transcontinentale spoorlijn dwars door Amerika aangelegd. Deze verbond treinnetwerken tussen de oostelijke en de westelijke kusten. De ontwikkeling van de spoorlijnen versnelde de verspreiding van de zogenaamde homesteaders die het westen koloniseerden, wat leidde tot een snelle ontwikkeling van nieuwe stukken land.
In Homesteaders zijn de spelers kolonisten in het oude westen, die een dorp ontwikkelen op een aangewezen stuk land. De spelers die het beste zijn dorp tot een stad kan ombouwen, krijgt de stad naar hem vernoemd en is de winnaar.

The game lasts 10 rounds, with each round consisting of an auction phase followed by a Building phase. After the last round, players get 1 final income phase and one last chance to buy and sell goods and use their building abilities before scores are tallied.
Players score for their buildings, bonuses conferred by buildings, and points earned throughout the game from selling resource cubes.
